Activists launched campaign against the shortage of antiretroviral drugs in Venezuela

June 21, 2018

Entities, activists and carriers of HIV and AIDS launched the campaign #ANTIRETROVIRALESYA to denounce the shortage of antiretroviral drugs in Venezuela, which is now on 100%. The campaign aims to raise awareness institutions, civil society organizations and the entire international community to the drama experienced by people living with HIV and AIDS in the country. From January 3, 2018 to this date, there have been registered 3120 deaths due to HIV and AIDS.

According to the records of Venezuela’s national AIDS and STD program for the year 2016, there were 7,121 people receiving antiretroviral therapy. In April 2018, the Venezuelan Network of Positive People reported that more than 80,000 people with HIV are directly affected and at risk of death due to the scarcity of antiretroviral drugs in the country. Venezuela has suffered a serious humanitarian crisis since 2013, registering food and medication shortages, hyperinflation and rising of violence rates.
