Muslim states block gay groups from U.N. AIDS meeting

Egypt on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, submitted a request to the presidency of the UN General Assembly to block the participation of 11 LGBT organizations from attending a high-level meeting next month on ending AIDS, reports Reuters. The document  sparked a protest by  Canada and the European Union.

Questions about LGBT rights and participation of groups that defend their rights in UN events have been controversial. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon calls for equal, but faces opposition from African states, Arabs and Muslims, as well as Russia and China.
