In Panama, Venezuelan women with HIV are deported

June 29, 2018

Networks and regional organizations working on Human Rights, Gender and HIV denounce that women living with HIV in Venezuela are compulsively tested for HIV. According to these sources, those who are diagnosed HIV positive, are delivered, by health professionals, to the National Directorate of Migration, who detain them for immediate deportation.

The Government of Panama, through its immigration office, justifies the process of deportation and definitive expulsion using paragraph 2 of article 71 of the Panamanian Migration Law. Regiolanes networks and organizations affirm that “People with HIV are not a threat to security.” The Brazilian Interdisciplinary Association of AIDS signed the petition.
