Brazilian Interdisciplinary AIDS Association (ABIA) was founded in 1987 by a person living with HIV, sociologist Herbert de Souza, Betinho, one of the first people to associate with AIDS and human rights in the world. This demarcated a political and institutional field, based on solidarity, that has crossed the organization’s trajectory. This publication chronicles the legacy of Betinho and other big names in the AIDS field, such as activist Herbert Daniel. It also reveals ABIA’s 30-year contribution to cultural activism, the democratization of communication and access to medicines, as well as the value of welcoming and living with HIV and AIDS.
